The Paramountcy of COP29: Catalyzing Global Climate Resilience

What is COP29?

The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) constitutes a pivotal milestone in the international community’s quest for a climate-resilient future. This esteemed gathering converges world leaders, experts, and stakeholders to address the pressing imperatives of climate change. The COP29 conference is happening in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024. This global gathering brings together world leaders, experts, and stakeholders to tackle the pressing challenges of climate change.Time Zone: Asia/Baku (UTC+4)

To fortify global cooperation, COP29 seeks to:

1. Enhance Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for accelerated emissions reduction

2. Mobilize climate finance, technology, and innovation for a low-carbon economy

3. Strengthen climate adaptation and resilience, particularly for vulnerable communities

4. Promote climate justice, equity, and human rights.

With a central focus on climate finance, COP29 reached a breakthrough agreement that will :

  1. Triple finance to developing countries, from the previous goal of USD 100 billion annually to USD 300 billion annually by 2035.
  2. Secure efforts of all actors to work together to scale up finance to developing countries, from public and private sources to the amount of USD 1.3 trillion per year by 2035

At COP29, countries negotiated a new climate finance goal, replacing the existing commitment of $100 billion annually until 2025. Success at COP29 hinged on establishing a new goal that is based on the needs of developing countries and addresses the previous goal’s shortcomings. Wealthy countries will need to fulfill their responsibility of playing their role in providing climate-vulnerable countries with a level of support that’s needed to transition to a low-emissions, climate-resilient future.

What’s Needed for the Global Goal on Adoption?

ACT2025 provides a valuable go-to guide for understanding global adaptation. It examines COP28 outcomes on adaptation and sets expectations for what is needed in 2024 and at COP29 to ensure adaptation efforts are effective, equitable and in line with the urgent needs of vulnerable developing countries. The paper also goes beyond the UNFCCC and outlines the trends expected in the global adaptation space in 2024.

COP29 represents a critical juncture, building upon the momentum established by preceding sessions, notably:

COP27’s landmark Loss and Damage Fund

COP26’s Glasgow Climate Pact

COP21’s Paris Agreement

UN Climate Change News, 22 November 2024 – UN Climate Change and the COP29 Presidency celebrated the start of a new chapter in global climate transparency during COP29, with the first submissions of Biennial Transparency Reports (BTRs) under the Paris Agreement.
